Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

Scaling and Root Planing:

Roseville Gum DiseaseA method of treating periodontal disease when pockets are greater than 3 mm. Scaling is used to remove plaque and tarter beneath the gum line. A local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort. Using an instrument called a small scaler or an ultrasonic cleaner, plaque and tarter are carefully removed down to the bottom of each periodontal pocket. The tooth's root surfaces are then smoothed or planed. This procedure allows the gum tissue to heal and makes it more difficult for plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces.

Perioscopy: A new non-surgical option

Traditionally, the more aggressive treatment option for people suffering from advanced stages of periodontal disease was surgery. Now there is a new procedure called perioscopy, featuring miniaturized digital video technology that enables your clinician to diagnose and treat areas below the gum line without the discomfort and inconvenience of surgery.

Perioscopy allows Drs. Hakimi/Ahmad and your hygienist to effectively treat periodontal and other dental conditions, which might otherwise go undetected and ultimately undermine your oral health and perhaps even affect your overall well-being.

In keeping with their commitment to stay on the forefront of medical and technological innovations and provide the highest quality of care, Drs. Hakimi/Ahmad and your hygienist have received specialized training in the use of perioscopy. We are pleased to be able to provide you with this state-of-the-art treatment alternative and would be happy to discuss any questions you might have.

Localized Antibiotic Therapy

The antibiotic uses microsphere technology to easily and effectively kill the germs that cause periodontal disease. It is administered directly into the infected pockets between your teeth. Drs. Hakimi/Ahmad and your hygienist can administer localized antibiotic therapy after scaling and root planing, a common procedure used to treat periodontal disease.

When used together with scaling and root planing, localized antibiotic therapy significantly reduces the depth of infected pockets and helps prevent disease progression. A combined therapy of localized antibiotics plus scaling and root planing is more effective at fighting periodontal disease than scaling and root planing alone.
